World Ranking starting May 1, 2007

For files, please visit "LIBARY" link on the top row of Cues Asia web site www.cues.com.tw.

Dear All,

After a long discussion I'm very happy to announce that we will start from the 1st of May 2007 with the WPA World Ranking again.

Please find attached:

1. The definite rules for the new ranking.
2. The definite list with events counting for this World ranking in 2007.

It is a pitty to see that only APBU don't send an reaction concerning their announcement for continental events counting for the World Ranking but it is still possible to send their events later on.

Further I want to point out again that the boardmembers of the continents are responsable for sending the results of all tournaments on their continent which are counting for the ranking. The most important issue to have a godd and reliable ranking.

I received also an E-mail from Ed Smith (BCA) regarding the proposal for the world ranking. Ofcourse we are glad that new input came and I want to ask Ed to bring this up at our full board meeting were we then can discuss if and how we should add things to the Ranking system.

Thanks again for your effords en help.

Tan & Joven Join won at the KIA Motors Korea Open

Seoul, Korea- Players from Japan, Philippines, USA, Hong Kong, Guam, and Korea joined the 4th Annual KIA Motors Korea International Championships. This event was originally the first ever international pool event in Korea which has led to the pool boom in Korea spurred on by Dragon Promotions.

The steady improvement by the Korean players was evident once again as early favorites Charlie Williams, Filipino Carlo Biado, and Joven Bustamente all faced early defeats on the winners sides at the hands of the South Koreans. Defending champion Hisashi Kusano (JPN) cruised through to the final 16 re-draw with ease as did Japan's Hiroshi Takenaka and Go Takami. Steadily improved player Lee Chenman of Hong Kong went unscathed through the winner's side as well.
For the first time in Korean billiards history, a woman was allowed to play in the men's pro event. Yu Ram Cha had her stamina tested as she played 4 back to back matches with no breaks. Cha drew Taiwan's #1 woman's ranked player Hsiang Ling Tan and won a tough 7-5 match. Cha then went on to play #12 Japan Ranked Hayato Hijikata. Coincidentally, Cha and Hijikata are the reigning Boys and Girls World 10-Ball Champion respectively. Cha crushed Hijikata 9-4 and then went on to play against Korea's #4 Woman's player Yun Mi Lim and defeated her 7-1 in 20 minutes. Cha next played former #1 Korean Woong Dae Kim and was at 6-6 went Kim eventually broke away and won the match 9-7. An impressive performance by the young 19 year old female.

"This will be great for her game (Cha) but I'm not sure if the men like it. I sense fear in many of them when they have to face her." commented Myung Jin Kim, General Manager of Dragon Promotions Korea.

On Sunday the XTM televised rounds, Tan struggled against Japan's #2 Kawahara 7-5 then cruised controlled through to the final four. She then defeated Bo Ram Cha 6-3 in the semi-finals. The fans were expecting a re-match with Yu Ram and Tan but Korea's Yun Mi Lim came back for a revenge match against Cha. Cha made several errors early on and allowed Lim to gain a sizable lead. Cha had a few opportunities but Lim was able to close out the match at 6-3. The final match was no contest as Tan breezed through Lim 6-3 for the title.
On the men's side, Filipino young aces Biado and Bustamente caught their second wind and were wiping out their opponents. In the last 16, Biado eliminated Taiwan's Po Hsien Lee and then destroyed Takenaka while Joven won a 10-7 battle against Chenman. In the semi-finals, Korea's #5 Won Sik Ham fell to Takami 7-5 in his first TV match. Joven then eliminated Biado 7-3 and put himself in his first televised finals. The finals saw Joven Bustamente, fluid and confident as he controlled Takami from start to end. Takami had no answer for Joven and fell 7-3.

"I want to thank Bugsy Promotions for bringing me here and thanks to all the sponsors of this event." said the mild mannered Joven Bustamente after shaking hands and receiving the trophy from CJ Media Vice President Richard Shim.

'07 World Cup of Pool

2007 PartyPoker.net World Cup of Pool

25th – 30th September

Rotterdam, Holland

Matchroom Sport is delighted to announce that the second annual PartyPoker.net World Cup of Pool will be taking place at Outland, a futuristic nightclub in Rotterdam, Holland from Tuesday 25th – Sunday 30th September.

Last year’s successful inaugural event happened in Newport, Wales when the dynamic Team Philippines pairing of Efren Reyes and Francisco Bustamante cast aside Malta, Malaysia, Czech Republic and Germany en route to an emphatic 13-5 win over the USA in the final.

This year, the Philippines return to defend their trophy against 31 others teams containing the very best in World pool. Host nations Holland will be well supported and their two teams – Niels Feijen & Nick van den Berg and Alex Lely and Rico Diks – will have every chance to do well on home soil.

American Rodney Morris will be back, this time partnered by a resurgent Corey Deuel, and they will be hoping to go one better than last year. From Taiwan come Wu Chia-ching and Yang Ching-shun and they will certainly be one of the favourites for the competition.

Germany, England, Finland, Italy and Spain will all be looking to do well from the European contingent and from Asia, nobody will be underestimating Vietnam who arrived as rank outsiders but narrowly went out to the Americans at the semi-final stage.

This year there is a slight change in format as the tournament goes to winner-breaks from the outset and the races are to eight for the first two rounds, then nine for quarter and semi-finals and finally 11 for the championship decider.

The prize-fund stays the same at a total of US $250,000 with $30,000 going to each member of the winning team. First round losers are guaranteed $1,500 per man to soften the blow of defeat.

The venue this year is Outland, one of Holland’s premier nightclubs, and Matchroom Sport will be staging the event in a different way to their normal productions, making full use of the venue’s high-tech lighting system and two overlooking balconies.

Tickets for the event are generously priced at €2.50 and €4.00 and available from the usual outlets – www.matchroomsportdvd.com and select pool clubs in all the major Dutch cities.

Television production is by Matchroom Sport to their usual high standards and the event will be produced as 31 x one hour shows for distribution world-wide.

The 2007 PartyPoker.net World Cup of Pool is sanctioned by the World Pool Association and sponsored by PartyPoker.net, part of the world’s leading online gaming company.

Commented Matchroom Sport Chairman Barry Hearn, “We felt that the pool world was crying out for a team event like this so decided to take the plunge last year with the World Cup of Pool. The tournament was a huge success and I’m certain that this year’s will be even better.

“It’s all about the players and last year they delivered some fantastic performances with top class shot-making and plenty of drama throughout.

“Of course, the Philippines will start as favourites – not many people will back against Efren and Django – but there are plenty of teams there to challenge them and there will always be at least one pool minnow that has a great week as they emerge from the pack.

“Our events have always been well supported in Holland and I hope that the 2007 PartyPoker.net World Cup of Pool proves no exception,” he added.

Sayginer Leads Carom Team in KIA Masters of the Trickshot

Seoul, Korea-  For the first time ever in billiards history, Pocket Billiards took on Carom Billiards in a team trickshot event. The Pocket Ball Team was captained by USA's famed Mike Massey while the Carom Team was captained by Turkey's Semih Sayginer.  The Pool Team consisted of Shanelle Loraine of Guam, Shuji Nagata of Japan, and Sung Wook Choi of Korea. The Carom Team were Yu Ram Cha of Korea, Pil Hyun Cho of Korea, and Sweden's legendary Torbjorn Blomdahl.
The event took place at KIA Motors Showroom headquarters in Seoul and produced by Dragon Promotions.

"Carom trickshots and pool trickshots have inspired so many players with their magnificence. I thought it would be neat to have audiences see both at the same time with some friendly rivalry. And having each game's best man, Semih and Mike, would showcase it like no one's ever seen before." explained Charlie Williams, architect of this new event.
The format for the event involved 3 stages. The first stage each team would select a player to perform a shot on their home table and then the opposing team would select a player to duplicate that shot.  Sayginer won the lag for the team and selected Blomdahl for the first shot. Blomdahl made the shot and a point for the team while Massey took on the challenge but failed to make the point for the pool team. Next Loraine matched up against Cha and both players scored a point for their team. Then Cho made a force follow 3 Cushion shot with Choi of Korea tying him with a perfect duplication for a point each. Finally Nagata of Japan made 6 balls in one shot with Sayginer dupicating it on his second attempt for the point.
Score Carom Team 4 - 3 Pool Team.
The second stage involved one on one challenges with both players performing a shot on their own table with the other player having to duplicate. Only one player could score the match point for the team, so the first player to do their shot and duplicate the opponents shot would win. Massey defeated Cho in the first challenge. Next Sayginer defeated Choi with a magnificent looping masse. Then Loraine defeated Cha with a simple push stroke shot to tie the match, but Blomdahl defeated Nagata to put the Carom Team still ahead by one point 6-5.

Torbjorn & Semih perform a trickshot together with Success!

The last stage was an individual performance by each player consisting of 3 shots each. The three judges included Peter Kim, CJ Media Executive and Cindy Lee , President of Dragon Promotions. The players were judged on number of attempts, impressiveness of shots, and entertainment style.  Each player performed their routine to add to their team's scores and in the end Captains Sayginer and Massey scored the highest routine each with near perfect 8 points each out of 9 points. The Carom Team held their lead to win by one point 31-30!
The event was sponsored by KIA Motors, Coca Cola, and CYON Phones and will air on Korea's variety network XTM.

Team Carom celebrates after the score were tallied.
