ACS Presents The All American Tour Results from The Blue Chalk Club
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The thirty-first stop of the 2006/2007 McDermott All American Tour (produced by the American CueSports Alliance – ACS) was hosted by owner Ron Dobosenski at The Blue Chalk Club, in Middleton, Wisconsin, on April 14, and featured a $1,000 added purse with seventeen players. The event included a double-elimination 8-ball format on Gabriel 7-footers, and Ron Dobosenski (Madison, WI) ran undefeated to the finals.  In the hot-seat match, Dobosenski out maneuvered Tom Cox (Madison, WI) 5-1.  Earlier in the A-bracket semi-finals, Dobosenski had outplayed Pat Hall (Madison, WI) 5-1, while Cox dominated Jim Fitzpatrick (Madison, WI) 5-2.  In the B-side semifinals, Tom McCloskey (Des Plaines, IL) took out Tom Oman (Richland Center, WI) 5-4; and in the B-side finals McCloskey gained more momentum by eliminating Tom Cox 5-3.  McCloskey had to defeat Ron Dobosenski two sets for the title, and Tom succeeded by the slimmest of margins to take the title over Dobosenski 5-3, 5-4!

By virtue of second-place Ron Dobosenski being the highest-finishing ACS member, he qualified for a free singles entry into the 2007 ACS Nationals in Las Vegas – courtesy of the ACS.  The ACS wishes to thank sponsors McDermott Handcrafted Cues, Silver Cup Chalk, Billiard Wholesalers and Pro Series Cases for their support in donating “Value-In-Kind” product for this and all stops on the McDermott All American Tour. Sponsorship opportunities are still available by contacting the ACS.

2007 Amway Women's World 9-ball Championship

By: John Barton
Why don't we get some Domino's? Nah Pizza Hut is better. How aboutSubway or Starbucks? Let's just got to 7-11 and get some microwavespaghetti. Sound familiar?  It should because these were all choicesavailable to the world's best female pool players as they descended onthe suburb of Taipei, Taiwan called Tao Yuan to compete in one of theworld's largest shopping malls for the 2007 world championship title. Called the 2007 Amway Women's World 9-Ball Championship, this contestfeatured women from around the world, including Venezuela and Turkey forthe first time.   While there was some grumbling about the format and the conditions, specifically easy pockets and races to five in the round-robin stages, the fact is that the conditions were the same for all the participants. The most notable victim of the conditions was an out-of-form AllisonFisher who failed to advance into the quarter finals. A very in-form Pan Xiao Ting trounced a very nervous newcomer AmitRubilen in the finals 11-5 to win the whole thing.  Amit Rublilendeserved to be in the finals however with very strong and creative playwhich quite resembled her male stablemates from the Philippines.  Other highlights were Kim White's 5-8th place showing. The USA has beenwithout a title here for a long time and Kim was in fine form all weekhaving not lost a match.  Japanese player Hamanishi proved to be Kim'sbane however and slipped by relegating her to a spectator. Going back to the conditions this tournament was definitely a tester forthe nerves and concentration.  Distraction was everywhere from thecameramen and media photographers covering each match to shoppers goingup the escalators, to things dropping from the upper levels, torollerblading children crashing into the barriers.  It was a mighty featto relax and prepare for a match because private and quiet space washard to come by.  On top of that the matches were constantly startedearly to keep action going for the live broadcast. A good example of how absurd this was is showcased in the match betweenGerda Hofstaetter and Pan Xiao Ting in the round robin stage.  The matchwas scheduled for 6pm.  Gerda came to the arena at 5:30pm and settled into watch some pool before she played.  The match previous to hersfinished at around 5:40 and Gerda noticed the staff frantically lookingaround the arena. Surmising that they were looking for her she went downand was asked to start her match early.  So at 5:45pm, 15 minutes early, she started the match.  Gerda didn't miss or make one ball in that matcha Pan rolled to a 5:0 victory and the match was over before it wasscheduled to begin.  It was explained by the promoter that Taiwanese viewers preferred towatch a match from beginning to end rather than have the action cut inon matches that were in progress.  They also had a call-in promotiongoing where viewers could call a pay-per-call number and pick the winnerof an upcoming match and be eligible to win prizes.  So it was importantthat they keep action going on the main TV table to keep the callscoming in.  It was reported that in previous years the call-in promotionhad received around 500,000 calls at NT$10 per call. That's about .30ctsU.S. per call. VideoLand is a Taiwanese network that runs about four channels on cable. They broadcast the tournament live.  Every ball in every feature matchwas shown without interruption.  The miles of cables they used wasamazing.  As well they did interviews with the players which they usedas filler for slow moments.  Often they would play them during theplayer's matches so the fans and players were treated to the surrealexperience of hearing the player's words booming from the arenaspeakers.  Sometimes this brought a wry smile from the player and alaugh from the crowd and other times it was a clear disturbance for theplayer. All in all though it was a fantastic tournament.  The players with thebest performances advanced as they should.  There were upsets andblowouts and resolves to train harder and get ready for next year.

2007 Amway WPA World Women's 9-ball Championship

On April 5th promptly on schedule at 6:00pm local time the 2007 Amway
Women's World Championship was officially opened. Although play had
began at 11:00am and there were already some good matches in the books
it was the afternoon when Taiwan's Vice President, Shiu Lien-Lu, could
make it to welcome the world's best women to Taiwan.

After introductions of all the luminaries, including the organizer Mr.
Tu and Ian Anderson, the current WPA president, the competition resumed.

This year the 2007 Amway Worlds are being held at the gigantic Tai Mall
in Tao Yuan on the outskirts of Taipei. This mall has 10 floors
including the largest indoor sports park I have ever seen. Each week
the Taiwanese professionals square off here live for the televised
league series. So the sports minded visitors are well acquainted with
high level pool and the stands are full with knowledgeable spectators.

On the bus to the venue on Wednesday I was struck by the tired but
excited players who each came here as the best of the best in their
countries. Noticeably absent are Jeanette Lee and Vivian Villareal but
they are hardly missed with the depth of talent available and the
representation that is here. Kim White is putting in some strong
matches, winning her first two 5:3 and 5:1.

Kelly Fisher whitewashed Beligian wunderkind Wendy Jans in 5:0 but then
fell to Austian power player Jasmin Ouschan in a come from behind win
5:4. Just to put icing on the cake Ouschan dropped five balls on the
hill-hill break and parked the cueball in the center of the table for an
easy four ball run to win the match.

Allison Fisher lost to a Taiwanese qualifier, Ya-Ting Chan 5:1. Fisher
won her earlier match 5:4. She is clearly struggling as evidenced by
her uncharacteristic scratch on the 8 when following getting ball in
hand on the 7 when down 3:0. Ya-Ting however played great and kept the
pressure on.

Tiffany Nelson is struggling a bit having lost her first two, to Gerda
Hofstaetter 5:3 and then to Japanese player Hamanishi by the same score.
Her road doesn't get easier as she faces Xiao Ting Pan, China's number
one and most recent WPBA champion next.

Venezuela and Turkey are represented for the first time with Johanna
Espinoza and Eylull Kibaroglu respectively. The Philippines have sent
Rubilen Amit who has shown she can flat play in her opening matches
winning both by a 5:4 margin.

Even with the phenomenal amount of activity going on right at the edge
of the arenas the players are very focused. My conclusion is that if
you can play your best here then you can play anywhere. Pool is treated
as a sport alongside all the other sports in this activity park and it
is clear that the fans love it just as much as any other sport.

Amway and Videoland Sports along with the Chinese Taipei Billiards
Association have created a fantastic event in a great setting.

That's all for now from Tao Yuan. Good day and good rolls.

By John Barton, Tai-Yuan, Taiwan
