World Pool Championship - Smiling Crosby Upsets Reyes in Thriller

Smiling Crosby Upsets Reyes in Thriller

FLORIDA-BASED former Englishman Tony Crosby caused a huge shock on the opening day of the 2006 Philippines World Pool Championship as he edged out national hero Efren Reyes in an 8-7 thriller at the PICC in Manila.

In front of a highly enthusiastic 600-strong crowd, both players had chances to win it before Reyes missed a simple 9-ball to effectively hand the match to Crosby.

“I was so happy when I drew Efren as I’ve never played him before and always wanted to play him,” said Crosby.

“Win or lose I’d have been happy to have been there. But before the match I thought I’d win as I’d been playing well and I know I can beat anyone. I’d beaten Strickland, Hohmann, Sambajon so I knew I could mix it with the best.”

It was all Crosby for the majority of the match as 32 year-old Crosby built up a handy 7-4 lead against an off-form ‘Bata’.

At 7-4 down Reyes missed a simple black into the bottom left pocket leaving Crosby the 8 and 9 for a big upset. The American though missed a tight cut into the middle pocket and Reyes wrapped up the rack to take it to 5-7.

Crosby though, pulled off a top drawer shot in the next to clip the 1-ball in rail first and he then tied up Reyes in a tight snooker. Reyes escaped and Crosby lost the initiative as he left himself a hard shot on the blue 2. From there, the Filipino legend cleared to reduce the deficit to a single rack.

Reyes broke and ran the next to take the match to hill-hill but there was more drama in the final rack as nerves got the better of Crosby. He missed an orange 5 ball by inches and that left centre stage for Reyes to run out for victory in front of his adoring faithful but he missed the case 9-ball as the capacity crowd gasped in unison.

The 9-ball trundled toward the centre pocket leaving Tony Crosby the simplest of shots for the shock of the tournament so far.

He added: “I played good at the start but at 7-4 up I missed that 8 ball. Normally I make that but with the TV lights the cloth was a little slicker. I then missed that 4 ball by miles but that was nerves and pressure, said Crosby afterwards.

“When Efren was running out to win I felt a little embarrassed as I played a good match and only made a couple of bad shots. The people behind me were saying ‘well done, unlucky’ and to be honest I was thinking the same thing!

“When he missed the 9 though I was just praying that it was going to be easy and it turned out it was. This is by far the best place I’ve ever played a tournament and the excitement here is incredible. The crowd was so happy that I couldn’t help but laugh and joke with everyone.

“This has helped my chances a lot. Playing Efren first match has helped me a lot because you want to play the best player in the opener so you know where you stand. My chances of reaching the knockout stages have been given a huge boost.”

Reyes believed opposing players always raised their game when playing him. He said: “I lost some confidence after my opponent was able to make some tough shots. He got me at the beginning and the important thing is to win the lag. I still had a chance to win it in the last match but didn’t take it.

“I have to play better in the next two games if I want to go to the next round. Opponents always play best when they play against me so I have to be so careful.”

2006 Philippines World Pool Championship: Reyes, five others lose WPC Opener, Three Filipinos remain unbeaten

For immediate release

2006 Philippines World Pool Championship: Reyes, five others lose WPC Opener, Three Filipinos remain unbeaten

November 04, 2006 (Manila, Philippines) – In a country where pool is considered to be a top sport with millions of followers across the nation expecting a Filipino champion bearing the monicker "Magician" to bring home the 2006 World Pool Championship crown, it can't be easy being Efren Reyes. For the pool icon, being recognized as a national treasure who is expected to showcase a strong showing in the annual tournament, the pressure to live up to the expectations of the nation must be undoubtedly tremendous.

Not one Filipino faltered in their belief that their beloved hero would fail in his quest of emerging on top of the 128 man competition field especially with his recent string of victories in the international stage.

And yet the unimaginable happened—Efren "Bata" Reyes lost.

What is even more astounding is that he lost in his opening group match to a relative newcomer to the tournament, American Tony Crosby in a heartbreaking decision, 8-7, due to a momentary lapse in concentration.

Right from the start, it was an uphill battle for the 1999 World Champion Reyes as the 32 year old Crosby won the lag and took the first rack.

"It's very hard to lose the lag because you also lose the ability to dictate the tempo of the game early on. In this game you need every sort of advantage you can get especially since we are competing against the World's best." Said a visibly disappointed Reyes.

That being the case, Reyes still matched the intensity of Crosby rack per rack and managed to keep the score tied till the eighth frame, 4-4. But then the 2003 US Rookie of the year upped his skill level and proceeded to orchestrate a stirring three rack run by capitalizing on all the uncharacteristic mistakes of Reyes to sit on the hill, 7-4.

However, the 2006 IPT World 8 ball Open title holder Reyes as always had a few tricks left in his bag to be able to conduct his own three rack run which levelled the playing field at seven racks apiece coming into the 15 th frame.

A miscue by Crosby on the pink four ball gave Reyes the golden opportunity to take the match as he methodically picked and pocketed his shots leading up to the nine ball.

It should have been a done deal for the 52 year old as he simply had to guide the last ball home. However, the billiard gods must have been smiling on Crosby's corner as Reyes by sheer misfortune missed the easy nine ball corner pocket. "The pressure really got to me." remarked Reyes. Ultimately, Crosby claimed the match and delivered the tournament's first major upset, 8-7.

Meanwhile, three other Filipinos successfully began their 2006 World pool championship bid yesterday with early wins from Francisco "Django" Bustamante, 2004 Champion Alex Pagulayan and Marlon Manalo here at the plush Philippine International Convention Center.

Bustamante scored a heavily contested win against fellow countryman Jharome Pena, 8-7, in group 10 while Pagulayan delivered a rousing performance against Argentinian Gustavo Espinosa to claim the match, 8-2, over in group 4.

The former world pool runner up Bustamante, had to overcome a surprisingly strong challenge from Pena who had the 42 year old trailing 5-4, coming into the 10 th rack. Bustamante had to dig deep to storm back and eventually notch the victory in the nine-day event organized by Raya Sports, Matchroom sport and broadcasted over ESPN.

It was a thrilling spectacle to witness as both Filipinos clearly brought their best to the table, neither one willing to give way as they traded racks and delivering rack runs till the sixth frame.

A careless mistake by Bustamante on the 5 ball in sixth rack however made the match interesting which the young Pena and capitalized on without any hesitations. Pena then proceeded to clean the rack which sparked a two rack run to claim the early lead, 4-3. Bustamante responded immediately to the challenge by taking the eighth, tenth and eleventh racks to regain the lead 6-5. With the momentum on his side he eventually won the contest 8-7.

Over in group 4, Pagulayan had a much easier time bagging his first win of the tournament. Still fresh from his Philippine National Pool Championship stint, "the Lion" delivered the goods in 10 racks, 8-2, allowing his opponent Espinosa to take only two racks for the match.

Meanwhile, Manalo remained "Marvelous" in his group five, bagging his first day assignment and producing a victory over Canada's Nicolas Guimond, 8-5.

The other Filipinos who did not prevail over their opening day tasks were Antonio Lining and Leonardo Andam who were dealt bitter, 4-8, defeats by Spaniard David Alcaide and Ralf Soquet of Germany respectively, Roland Garcia against Korean Jeong Young-Hwa, 5-8, Ronato Alcano succumbing to Vietnamese Luong Chi Dung, 7-8 and Eduardo Villanueva failing against Italian Fabio Petroni, 3-8.

Despite their losses, Reyes and the other Filipinos still have a chance to advance to the round of 64. They have to at least make it to the top two of their respective group to move on to the knock-out phase, which begins on Wednesday.

Roberto Gomez, and Rodolfo "Boy Samson" Luat were still playing their respective opening day matches as of presstime.

The 128 players competing have been divided into 32 Groups of 4 players during the first four days of competition. All competitors will play each other once within each group in a race-to-eight, alternate break fomat.

Up for grabs is a total prize of US $400,000 (P20 Million) and the champion's purse of US $100,000 (P5 Million).

ESPN will broadcast all the exhilarating pool action from the opening break down to the final shot at the Philippine International Convention Center. ESPN will be devoting over 60 hours of live and exclusive coverage of the world's biggest and most prestigious pool competition.

The October 28-29 weekend featured three 2006/2007 McDermott All American Tour stops around the country, one of them being a $1,000 added 8-ball event with forty-one players, hosted by owner Dwaine Bowman at Leisure Time Billiards in E. Moline, Illinois, on Saturday. The American CueSports Alliance-produced event featured a double-elimination format on bar boxes, and Jamey Bowman of E. Moline, Illinois, ran undefeated through the field. In the hot-seat match, Bowman – rated a “5” on a regional handicap system used - clipped Jim LaFavre (Sterling, IL), also rated a “5”, 5-4. Jamey had earlier clipped his brother, Jesse [6], 5-5 and Dan Kuhl [5] 5-4. In the loser’s bracket, Rich Bideaux [5] (Moline, IL) eliminated Jesse Bowman [6] (E. Moline, IL) 5-5; LaFavre ousted Bideaux 5-4; and Dan Kuhl [5] (Davenport, IA) outgunned Jeremy Schroeder [4] (Iowa City, IA) 5-3. In the loser’s bracket finals, Kuhl upended LaFavre 5-4, to share the final’s seat with Bowman. The finals featured another hill-hill match, as Bowman claimed the title in the first set by a 5-4 decision over Kuhl.

ACS Presents The McDermott All American Tour Results from Sandite Billiards & Grill
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The October 28-29 weekend featured three 2006/2007 McDermott All American Tour stops around the country, one of them being a $1,000 added 8-ball event with twenty-eight players, hosted by owners Cindy and Mike Smith at Sandite Billiards & Grill in Sand Springs, Oklahoma, on Saturday. The American CueSports Alliance-produced event featured a double-elimination format on Valley bar boxes, and Greg Hogue of Tulsa, OK, ran undefeated through the field. In the A-side semis, Hogue whitewashed Russ Barker (Sand Springs, OK) 7-0. . In the A-side finals, Hogue overwhelmed T.J. Hamblin (Terlton, OK) 7-1. On the B-side, Lee Moses eliminated Russ Barker 7-4, Charley LaSarge (Okmulgee, OK) 7-3 and T.J. Hamblin 7-5. Moses’s string of wins came to an end in the tourney finals, as Greg Hogue continued his dominating play to claim the title over Moses by a 7-2 margin!

The ACS wishes to thank sponsors McDermott Handcrafted Cues, Silver Cup Chalk, Billiard Wholesalers and Pro Series Cases for their support in donating “Value-In-Kind” product for this and all stops on the McDermott All American Tour. SINGAPOREAN, TAIWANESE TAKE QUALIFIERS 7 AND 8

SINGAPOREAN, TAIWANESE TAKE QUALIFIERS 7 AND 8
BY: MARLON BERNARDINO

QUEZON CITY, PHILIPPINES---After leading the way in the qualifiers with four victories in six events, the Philippines found Halloween yesterday a day of heartbreak, while Singapore and Chinese Taipei turned it into a day of glory for themselves. Twice Filipino players entered the finals of the scheduled qualifiers; twice they were denied.

Lu Hsun-Chen of Chinese Taipei started things rolling in Qualifier 7 by beating Israel Rota of the Philippines, 9-4. The Cebuano cue master Rota had barged into the finals with impressive wins over Ruel Esquillo (7-4), Kang Chin-Ching (7-3), Shiau Wei-Wen (7-5), and Warren Kiamco (7-5).. But Lu proved even hotter, as he romped through his side of the draw with wins over Jonas Uhlin (7-1), Yu King-Chiu (7-1), Hisash Kusano (7-5), Lu Hui-Chan (7-3), and Chiang Ching-Yu (7-4).

Tan Tiong Boon of Singapore followed with an impressive win over Jharome Pena of the Philippiness. Trailing 0-3, Boon uncorked an impressive rally that enabled him not only to tie, but to move ahead 5-3. Pena kept trying to overcome the deficit, but every time he came close, Boon would spurt ahead again.

In the final game, Boon took all that Pena could dish out with his safety play. Forced into a kick shot, he knocked down the one-ball and proceeded to run out, though not without some anxiety and drama. He overshot position in the final play, leaving himself a tough cut shot. But Boon switched to his left hand and calmly sank the 9-ball into a corner pocket.

On the way to the finals, Boon knocked out Vicente Joyme (7-6), Mohamed Al Hosani (7-6), Yusoke Kuroda (7-1), Raymond Cruz (7-5), and Pan Shen-Ping (7-4).

Boon, 39, is the first player to break the monopoly of the Filipinos and Taiwanese of the 2006 Qualifiers. But he’s no stranger to high-level competition. He won a silver medal in 8-Ball in the Asian Games of 1998. And he’s ranked No. 2 in Singapore.

The qualifiers wind up today with Qualifiers 9 and 10 at the Star Billiards Center in Quezon City. Five slots are still up for grabs, with the addition of one more spot following the withdrawal of one French player from the main draw. This raises to three the number of players who will be winning berths through the point system. In all, 13 players will make it through the qualifiers. (MARLON BERNARDINO)
