> Inductee
>
> Goodlettsville, Tennessee -The Women's Professional Billiard Association
> (WPBA) will induct Belinda Campos Calhoun, The Texas Belle, from Austin into
> the WPBA Hall of Fame on November 8 at their 2006 Annual Banquet. The
> Banquet will be held at the Chinook Winds Casino in Lincoln City, Oregon in
> conjunction with the Cuetec Cues National Championship Women's Tour Event.
>
> Belinda was introduced to pool by a fellow she was dating during the summer
> of 1971, in Austin, Texas. "My first attempts were so disastrous, it became
> an instant challenge," says Calhoun. "The first time I saw a National
> Billiard News in 1972 and read that there were tournaments and championships
> I knew what I wanted to do."
>
> She qualified to play in her first U.S. Open 14.1 (Straight Pool)
> Championship in 1977 in her first attempt.  "Mother and I flew to Chicago
> and took the bus to Rockford, Illinois for my first qualifier.  The
> following month I competed in the U.S. Open in Dayton, Ohio and finished
> 3rd."  She credits her determination to the difficulty of the game itself.
>
> When asked what being a pro has meant to her, she replies, "a lifetime of
> dedication and sacrifice pursing a passion." A story that typifies the
> progress our sport has made, says Calhoun, "In 1985, myself, and three other
> players were in Kansas City for a tournament.  We were being pulled over and
> I'm shouting "hide the cues, hide the cues." Today, there is awe and wonder
> displayed when I proudly say, "I'm a professional pool player."
>
> "Being inducted into the WPBA Hall of Fame and joining players like Jean
> Balukas, Dorothy Wise and Ruth McGinnis never entered my mind. When I
> started playing it was strictly about striving for excellence and
> perfection," said Calhoun. "Now all the years of hard work have paid off.
> It's just like pool.  Focus on the process and the results will come."
>
> In addition to playing pool every day, giving private and group instruction,
> Belinda teaches an accredited course in pool at Texas State University.  She
> is also a long time member of Austin Cornerstone Church. In a recent
> interview, to be included in the 2007 WPBA Media Guide Calhoun was asked,
> "what are the best words of advice you have received from a friend?"  Her
> answer. DO IT!!
>
> The Women's Professional Billiard Association was formed in 1976 to promote
> competitive 9-Ball. In 1976 the tournaments were scarce with prize money
> barely covering the winner's expenses. The organization has grown from a
> handful of players into a well organized professional tour including a
> program of nine affiliated, recognized regional tours serving the needs of
> the over one thousand members in 2006. Since the WPBA began airing on ESPN
> in 1993, many of the women have become familiar names.
>
> Although there is no physical Hall of Fame at this time, the WPBA is working
> on a "Virtual Hall of Fame" at WPBA.com for the near future.

The McDermott All American Tour Results from Miller Time Billiards

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 10/19/06
TO:  ALL BILLIARD MEDIA
FROM: AMERICAN CUESPORTS ALLIANCE

ACS Presents The McDermott All American Tour Results from Miller Time Billiards

The first stop of the 2006/2007 McDermott All American Tour (produced by the American CueSports Alliance – ACS) featured a $500-added purse and thirty-nine players, hosted by owner Terry Anderson at Miller Time Billiards in Davenport, Iowa, on Saturday, October 14. The event featured double-elimination 8-ball on bar boxes, and Rodney Flenoi of E. Moline, Illinois ran undefeated through the field. In the hot-seat match, Flenoi – rated a “5” on a regional handicap system used - clipped Rich Bideaux (Moline, IL), also rated a “5”, 5-4. In the loser’s bracket semifinals, Mark Nelson [5] (Bettendorf, IA) eliminated Tommy Hernandez [6] (E. Moline, IL) 5-2. Nelson then eliminated Bideaux 5-3 in the loser’s bracket finals to share the final’s seat with Flenoi. Flenoi did not want to go to a second set, so he took out Mark Nelson 5-3 in the first set of the finals.

By virtue of Mark Nelson claiming second and being the highest-finishing ACS member, he qualified for a free singles entry into the 2007 ACS Nationals in Las Vegas – courtesy of the ACS. Congratulations are also extended to 71-year old Gary Norman (4) who placed 5th and to 13th-place Rachel Byrket (4), the highest-placing woman. The ACS wishes to thank sponsors McDermott Handcrafted Cues, Silver Cup Chalk, Billiard Wholesalers and Pro Series Cases for their support in donating “Value-In-Kind” product for this and all stops on the McDermott All American Tour. Sponsorship opportunities are still available by contacting the ACS.

The Tour really heats up the weekend of October 28-29 with three $1,000 added events at The Blue Chalk Club (Middleton, WI), Sandite Billiards & Grill (Sand Springs, OK) and Leisure Time Billiards (E. Moline, IL). Information, entry details and schedules for the 2006/2007 McDermott All American Tour are available at www.americancuesports.org. MOSCONI CUP TEAMS ANNOUNCED

Press Release

9th OCTOBER 2006

MOSCONI CUP TEAMS ANNOUNCED

‘Best from Both Sides’ to Contest Rotterdam Showdown

With the annual Mosconi Cup USA v Europe 9-ball clash set to take place at the historic Cruise Terminal, Rotterdam, Holland in December, promoters Matchroom Sport can announce the two sides to contest the 13th running of pool’s biggest team event.

The two teams march into battle from 7 - 10 December over four passionate days of singles, doubles and trebles play in an event broadcast live throughout on Sky Sports in the UK and SBS6 and Sport 1 in Holland and on delay by Fox Net in the States.

Team USA are once again defending champions in an event they have dominated in recent years, including a comfortable defence in Las Vegas last time out.

There are five players named for each side with the sixth member being decided after the 2006 Philippines World Pool Championship which takes place from 4-12 November.

This is in the event of an unnamed player doing well enough in the WPC to warrant Mosconi Cup inclusion.

There is one debutant on the American side as Mike Davis, following a couple of near misses, finally gets his chance.

Corey Deuel, who recorded 9 wins from 13 matches from 2000-2002, returns to the fray, whilst Archer, Morris and Strickland have superlative records in the event.

The five players selected are:

Johnny Archer (Georgia)

Rodney Morris (Hawaii)

Earl Strickland (North Carolina)

Mike Davis (Maryland)

Corey Deuel (Ohio)

For the Europeans there are wholesale changes to the side that capitulated in Las Vegas in December last year.

Only Mika Immonen remains and he will be joined by the German pairing of Ralf Souquet, returning to Mosconi Cup duty following a three year absence, and European No.1 Thomas Engert

Nick van den Berg (Holland) and debutant Imran Majid of England get in following impressive years on the EuroTour.

The five players selected are:

Mika Immonen (Finland)

Imran Majid (England)

Ralf Souquet (Germany)

Thomas Engert (Germany)

Nick van den Berg (Holland)

Barry Hearn, Chairman of promoters Matchroom Sport, said “I believe we have the best players from each side of the pond contesting the Mosconi Cup this year.

“There are a lot of great players out there but we have looked closely at the various rankings as well as individual performances throughout the year and we’re all looking forward to what promises to be another classic Mosconi Cup.”

This is the 13th running of pool’s answer to the Ryder Cup and the current score stands at 10 – 2 to the Americans.

The official sponsors of the 2006 Mosconi Cup are Brunswick Tables, Simonis Cloth, Super Aramith Pro Balls and Predator Cues.
